Project

Driving Core Banking Transformation at Standard Bank

Project Performed by our Senior Partner and Head of Project Management Office – Richard Breytenbach – (Part of his portfolio) This was a Core Banking Transformation program, specifically the decommissioning of the legacy Customer Information File (CIF) system under Business Release 5 (BR5). This complex undertaking, expertly managed by our senior project manager, involved a strategic shift towards SAP as the central source of all customer-level data, impacting numerous partner systems across the organization.

Centralizing Customer Data for Enhanced Service:

The BR5 CIF Decommissioning project aimed to streamline Standard Bank’s data architecture by establishing SAP as the single, authoritative source for all customer-related information. This necessitated significant changes to over 50 discrete applications within key partner systems, including Stanlib, Liberty, Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB), and Personal and Business Banking (PBB). By consolidating customer data within SAP, the project laid the groundwork for a more unified and efficient view of our customers, ultimately enabling enhanced service delivery and personalized experiences.

Introducing the Enterprise Data Isolation Module (EDIM):

A key technical innovation introduced by this project was the development and implementation of a new Enterprise Data Isolation Module (EDIM). This critical component was designed to handle the high-volume data exchange required for seamless integration between the existing legacy systems and the new SAP environment. Recognizing the evolving needs of the bank, the EDIM’s capabilities were strategically extended immediately post-implementation to accommodate additional high-volume, real-time SAP transactions. This proactive approach ensured the scalability and adaptability of the integration layer.

Architectural Shift: SAP CRM as the Customer Data Master:

The implementation of EDIM necessitated a significant architectural shift, positioning SAP Customer Relationship Management (CRM) as the ‘master’ system for all customer-related data. This meant that all partner (legacy) systems would now source their customer information directly from SAP CRM via the EDIM. This fundamental change ensured data consistency, improved data quality, and eliminated data silos, paving the way for more integrated and insightful customer interactions across all touchpoints.

Scale and Complexity:

The sheer scale and complexity of this project were substantial. During peak development and testing phases, the project team exceeded 150 professionals, highlighting the collaborative effort required to deliver this transformation. The significant investment, with a budget exceeding R70 million (excluding hardware procurement), underscores the strategic importance of this initiative to Standard Bank’s long-term technology roadmap.

Successful Delivery:

Despite the intricate nature and expansive scope, the BR5 CIF Decommissioning project was successfully completed, with implementation occurring in March 2015 and final delivery achieved in April 2015. This successful execution stands as a testament to the exceptional project management skills and the dedication of the entire team.

The successful decommissioning of the CIF system and the establishment of SAP as the central customer data repository represent a major milestone in Standard Bank’s core banking transformation journey. This project has not only modernized our technology infrastructure but has also laid a strong foundation for future innovation and enhanced customer service capabilities. The strategic vision and expert management of our senior project manager were instrumental in navigating the complexities of this undertaking and delivering a truly transformative outcome for Standard Bank.
